Immigrating to America as a teenager, Emma Goldman quickly experienced firsthand the inhuman working conditions she would oppose for the rest of her life. She was jailed three times: for "inciting a riot," teaching contraception, and fighting conscription for World War I. She and Berkman were deported to Russia just after the Bolshevik Revolution; seeing the authoritarian side of the long-hoped-for workers' uprising led her to write My Disillusionment in Russia. Later, she supported the fight against fascism in the Spanish Civil War. Throughout her richly storied life, Emma Goldman always took the side of the oppressed against capitalism and militarism and was always at the forefront of struggles of the powerless against society's strongest.

Sharon Rudahl's work has appeared in underground newspapers and magazines, Marvel Comics, and Wobblies!: A Graphic History; her art has been widely exhibited. She lives in Hollywood.

Paul Buhle, the editor of A Dangerous Woman, is a senior lecturer at Brown University. He has written, edited, or co-edited thirty-two books, including the Encyclopedia of the American Left, Wobblies!, and the recent Jews and American Popular Culture trilogy.

Alex Wexler is the author of a two-volume biography of Emma Goldman. She is a Research Scholar at the Center for the Study of Women at UCLA.
