'Onwards and Upwards' LP (Bluurg Records FISH 20)
It must be the middle of May -- in the same post I get a bundle of photocopied visions from the stonehenge Campaign and a Culture Shock LP. Good timing. But hold on there -- at this rate I'll be recycling what I said about their first LP this time last year, easy but unfair 'cos the Wessex Anarchist Orchestra are forging ahead, just like the LP title, faster and further all the time.
It's not just that this time round they're still tighter, better-produced, though still very live on vinyl. It's good to hear the the guitar noises stretch out just a little, the dub effects on 'Open Mind Surgery', and some variation on the usual song structure -- it's clear that their incessant touring has had musical as well as support-building benefits; just because their ska/thrash energy sounds a little like something that's been done badly by others for years doesn't mean stand still with it.
In fact, Dick's lyrical range has widened still further, from the straightforward anti-consumerist stance of 'Colour TV' and 'Civilisation Street' (both classic CS anthems) to attempts to deal with the puzzle of inter-tribal violence, being frightened to talk to strangers, and even the problems of being a popular 'political' punk songwriter (the long and ambitious 'I.S.D.'). Sometimes the contrast between music and lyrics is immense; good job there's a word-sheet, to be read and absorbed, not just chanted along to. From the reactions of radio, national press, and grassroots/grapevine, Culture Shock are clearly on their way, whilst still seeing and saying as as clear and strong as they ever did. This LP shows why, perfectly; if you're not dead to the possibilities of energetic engagement through music, you'll like it as much as I do. -- Hieronymuss
